Take the Modern Farmhouse Décor Route
There’s a rural, comfy, shabby chic home design that has been swarming Instagram and Pinterest feeds lately – Modern farmhouse decor!
Modern
farmhouse is
about clean lines of modern design combined with the coziness of a farmhouse.
Having these two concepts merged, an exclusively fresh modern country living
inspired style is created. Farmhouse
style is
famous for its warmth and minimalism, characterized by natural textiles and
materials such as steel and wood, materials that you would normally find in a
real farm house. Now, let’s get nitty-gritty
about key features of a Modern
farmhouse.
1.
White exteriors
Most of the farmhouses have their exteriors in
white, and you may sporadically find some wood touches, giving it this rustic
feel. The front door, the shutters, and the garage doors for example would be
in natural wood. Some history would be good here though. So, why are their
exteriors white anyway? Because it all began with lime paint, what we call now
whitewash, used during the colonial eras to prevent mold from forming on the
inside and outside of houses! So, you actually can paint it other than white,
but for the sake of history and tradition, you may keep it white as well.

2.
Windows and lots of them
Modern farmhouses are known for their many big
windows that let as much sunlight in as possible. Open floor plans are being
adopted in modern farmhouse architecture too to enhance this openness and
spacious feel around the house. Large windows are also there to ventilate the
place more easily. Moreover, these large windows are also loved in modern
farmhouses as they provide panoramic views of beaches, pools, or mountains, or
whatever that is surrounding the house. As you can see, this farmhouse from
@whitehallbuildingandcompany, a construction company, has a lot of windows from
all sides of the house.
3.
Porch lights
Porch lights have always been a signature of
farmhouses and part of modern farmhouse decorating items. In
addition to being essential for the setting, they are very useful and practical
too, as they guide you through the entrance of your house at night and keep
thieves away, giving the signal that the house is occupied even when it’s not.
You can see an example in the below house from the Lighting
Store @destination_lighting.
4.
Huge Covered Porches
Porches are essential and crucial in modern
farmhouses. They can be small or big but need to be there. Farmhouse owners
usually add rocking chairs on their porches with comfortable pillows and throw
blankets and cushions, making the whole setting even more cozy! You can also
set a swing, or couches, or a small table with chairs. @homeathand interior
design studio has perfectly decorated this wonderful porch with Heirloom
pumpkins in vintage metal crates, lanterns, and lots of textiles. A real gem
this one!
5.
Garage doors
Garage doors are another hallmark of Modern
Farmhouse architecture. They typically have curved windows and diagonal pieces
of wood creating an X. These carriage-style garage doors known to some as
barn-style garage doors as well, date back to the epoch of the carriage house,
meaning, where horses’ carriages were stored. Since no carriages are used
anymore in the contemporary time, these garage doors are used now for
decoration purposes. Check this one out from @barndoorplusmore, all woody and
beautiful!
